Does not wisdom cry out? . . . Beside the gates leading into the city, at the entrances, she cries aloud. Proverbs 8: 1a and 3
History: City’s Gate PCA formed in 1997 in response to the vision of several couples who felt led by God to start a church within the city limits of Harrisburg. The early mission of the church was to interact with city residents during daily life and cultural events, such as open mic nights, poetry readings, etc. There was also an emphasis on establishing prayer cells in city neighborhoods. The goal was for members to love their neighbors and allow Christ to work through them to spiritually revitalize the city. This focus has broadened since the inception of the church, but there remains a strong emphasis on developing relationships and meeting diaconal needs both within the congregation and throughout Harrisburg and the surrounding communities.
Emphasis: In keeping with the PCA’s Reformed tradition, the grace of God has been a central theme of worship in the church, as well as a primary focus in the lives of members and regular attendees. Our congregation believes that God uses broken people like us to accomplish His divine purpose. We seek to worship and glorify God in order to be changed by Him; to become more like Him; and ultimately to lead others to Him.
Demographic: The median age of the congregation is young and is comprised of a large percentage of families with young children. The congregation is predominately white, many are professionals and/or students, and most dress casually for worship. During the 2007 calendar year average Sunday attendance was 79.
Worship: Worship blends an informal and contemporary style with a strong liturgical base. There is an emphasis on prayer, scripture, and expository teaching that is oriented to personal and communal application. The sacrament of Communion is observed every Sunday. Music is a prominent and integral part of worship.
Facilities: The church has always met in rented facilities and has moved several times since its beginning, but worship has always taken place within the city limits. Since May of 2007 the church has rented facilities of another city church at Green and Verbeke Streets.
Activities: The church sponsors weekly small groups for prayer and the study of scripture, and a Wednesday evening meeting for adult and children’s education. The church encourages its members to work redemptively with various organizations within the city and the surrounding communities.
